SOULCALIBER VI (Project Soul/Bandai Namco – PS4, X1, PC – Q4 2018?) – Announced at last year’s Game Awards, Soulcalibur VI is supposed to be a celebration of the series’ 20th anniversary (though Soul Edge/Soul Blade came to arcades in 1995 and was ported to Playstation in ’96). The game is slated for release later this year; however, Amazon preorders have the street date as being January 8, 2019. Like Tekken 7, it will run on Unreal Engine and is being produced by Motohiro Okubo.

The original Soulcalibur, a launch title for the Dreamcast, is often regarded as one of the greatest fighting games of all time. It tells the story of the Soul Edge, a cursed blade wielded by Nightmare, and the warriors and sacred weapons (including the titular Soul Calibur) that intend to stop it. It introduced the eight-way run, which revolutionized combat in 3D fighters; previously, players only had limited lateral movement along the third axis. This game is the only one in the series that hasn’t appeared on a Playstation console—Dreamcast was chosen because the PS1 didn’t have the processing power necessary to animate Ivy’s whip correctly.

Many fans noted that Sophitia and Mitsurugi looked much younger in the trailer for the sixth installment than they have in more recent games. According to a Namco Bandai press release, the game will take place in the 16th century to “uncover hidden truths” during the events of Soulcalibur. Okubo stated it codenamed “Luxor” to evoke the brightness of the original game. A new slow-motion mechanic called Reversal Edge was also announced; it will allow players to strike quickly after defending themselves. The press release described it as a “scene from an action movie.” Critical Edge signature moves will also make a return.

The game will launch with 16 fighters, 13 of which have been already revealed. We also know the game will also continue the series tradition of guest characters. Previous entries have included Link, Darth Vader, and Spawn. One of the launch characters for Soulcalibur VI will be Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher. He will use Witcher sign magic as part of his gameplay.
